How can lessons from the past be helpful in
addressing today's challenges to the safety
of people in the Arctic Ocean

What are the UArctic x Lloyd's Register Foundation Research Fellowships?

The Research Fellowships are part of a new partnership between the Lloyd's Register Foundation (LRF) and the University of the Arctic (UArctic). The Fellowships aim to support researchers that will use historical perspectives and apply them to current safety challenges in the Arctic Ocean and its peoples.

The Arctic is undergoing profound physical and geopolitical changes that have global significance. Rapid changes in the physical environment of the marine Arctic will push existing ecological, social, and economic systems toward new structures. The purpose of this research programme is to be proactive in the changing Arctic Oceanic environment rather than responding to challenges when it is too late. An unparalleled breadth of expertise must be mobilized to address the challenge of securing a safe and resilient future for this highly complex marine system.

Proposals will be invited for research that draws upon history to help with the safety challenges of the changing Arctic Ocean. Research Fellows may come from a variety of disciplines including humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

UArctic have launched the call for applications for the 2024 Research Fellowships. Further information on the fund can be found here. Information on the application process can be found here.
