Andrey N. Petrov is a broadly trained social scientist and Professor of Geography at the
University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, USA. He serves as Director of the Arctic, Cold and
Remote Territories Interdisciplinary Center (ARCTICenter) that focuses on sustainability,
resilience and adaptation to climate change in Arctic, cold, remote regions of the world. His
research expertise is understanding and modeling sustainability of human-environment systems in
the context of socio-economic, environmental and geopolitical change in the Arctic, with an
emphasis on sustainability Indigenous community resilience and adaptation. Dr. Petrov leads multiple collaborative research projects in different parts of the Arctic (primarily Alaska, Canada and Northern Eurasia) and has directed he Research Coordination Networks in Arctic Sustainability (Arctic-FROST) and Arctic Coastal Resilience (Arctic-COAST). Dr. Petrov served as President of the International Arctic Social Sciences Association (IASSA), Chair of the
International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) Social and Human Working Group, and Chair of the Polar Geography Specialty Group of the American Association of Geographers (AAG). He currently sits on the IASC Council and U.S. Polar Research Board. He has published nine co- authored and edited volumes, including Arctic Sustainability Research: Past, Present and Future (2017), and Arctic Sustainability: A Synthesis of Knowledge (2020), and nearly 100 peer-reviewed articles.
