  • Master’s Theses on WASH in Greenlandic Settlement Housing
    • The Arctic WASH Summer Course in June 2023 became a starting point for interdisciplinary collaboration between two students completing their Master's degrees, and falling in love with the Arctic. Chloe (from the US) and Agata (from Poland) met in Sisimiut, getting introduced to the unique challenges of rural communities of Greenland. A field visit in Itilleq, focusing on sanitation, sparked the idea to dedicate their final projects to the household water storage in the Greenlandic settlement housing. The collaboration deepened as Agata and Chloe integrated their perspectives to focus on both building design and water quality. While still working on two different projects, they joined efforts, and in September 2024 they returned to Itilleq for a week-long fieldwork. Their research findings were published in their theses and presented during conferences in Denmark and Finland to audiences of water and Arctic professionals, respectively, to increase awareness of pressing challenges in the Greenlandic settlements. The summer course went beyond broadening academic horizons - it fostered a meaningful international and interdisciplinary partnership.

  • Awareness campaign for Children in Svalbard
    • The overall purpose of the Flushwatch project is to contribute to increased citizen awareness in Svalbard, as well as in Greenland and Iceland. The intention is that knowledge of the problems will lead to increased protection against litter and wastewater in the Arctic seas. Findings through the Climarest project revealed that people often flush cotton buds, contact lenses, condoms, sanitary pads/tampons and wet wipes down the drain. All these products form a carpet on the seabed which interferes with the sedimentary deposits and the animals that depend on them.
