Danish Meterological Institute

The Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) is the national meteorological institute for the Kingdom of Denmark. It is organized under the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities. DMI is situated on several addresses: Our headquarter in Copenhagen, and operating at Karup- and Skrydstrup Air Base and in Nuuk, located with Joint Arctic Command. 

As the meteorological authority of the Kingdom of Denmark, DMI operates on a 24/7 basis and issues warnings to society and citizens regarding extreme weather events. DMI provides meteorological services to the emergency management authorities and the armed forces, as well as to civil aviation and maritime transport in Denmark and Greenland. DMI’s Ice Service observe the sea ice using satellite imagery and provides information on ice conditions in Greenlandic waters to ensure safe navigation around Greenland.  

DMI’s research and development activities enhance the institute’s core functions, ensuring greatest possible value for society. DMI serves as the Danish Government’s climate science advisor and communicate knowledge on climate change and climate science developments in Denmark and Greenland. This advisory role is supported by DMI’s research and development most notably through the National Center for Climate Research, which is anchored within DMI.  

DMI provides open access to its weather, ocean, and climate data, historically and in real time. This open data policy supports green and digital transitions and growth across the Kingdom.  

DMI’s IT and observational infrastructure in Denmark and Greenland must operate reliably around the clock, as the collection, processing, and dissemination of data are essential prerequisites for delivering accurate and timely forecasts and warnings. Ongoing maintenance and stable operation of this infrastructure are fundamental to the institute’s activities.  

At a global level, we participate in the development of future climate scenarios. DMI is the national representative on the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
