The cooperation is based on a three year educational project ’ Visualization of Environmental Change’ that is part of activities of the thematic network ’Communicating Arctic Science’ of the University of the Arctic. In the project, students of photography, natural sciences and human sciences will be brought to work together in yearly international workshops in Kuusamo, Finland at Oulanka research station of Thule Institute of University of Oulu. The total budget of the project is 293 000 euros and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation agreed to contribute an amount of 145 000 euros.
As results of the project, a photo book on the topic will be produced, together with a travelling international exhibition. Also a visit in Kuusamo by the HSH the Sovereign Prince Albert II is planned to take place during the festivities at the end of the project in autumn of 2016. On Monday 14th of April 2014 the president of University of Oulu Lauri Lajunen will sign the financial agreement related to the project together with representatives of the foundation and will also meet HSH Prince Albert II.

As part of a memorandum of Understanding signed between the University of the Arctic, a network of over 160 higher education and research organizations in the arctic and beyond, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation, the University of Oulu, represented by its President, Lauri Lajunen, and the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation officially announced their cooperation.
