The workshop at NArFU brought together researchers from four British (University of Aberdeen, University of Leeds, University of St. Andrews, University of the Highlands and Islands) and nine Russian educational and research institutions from Norilsk, Krasnoyarsk, Tyumen, Ekaterinburg, Ulan-Ude, Khanty-Mansiysk, Syktyvkar and Arkhangelsk.

The programme consisted of three sessions. Henry Burgess, the Head of the NERC Arctic Office, presented an overview of contemporary British Arctic research. Marina Kalinina, NArFU Rector’s Adviser on International Cooperation, analyzed the state and prospects of today’s Arctic scientific research in the context of international cooperation.

During the second and the third session workshop participants discussed changes in the Arctic, questions related to ecosystems and their monitoring, climate change impact on Northern communities and etc. A separate session was dedicated to social aspects of Arctic research, for instance a historical overview of land entitlement and land use in the Arctic was presented.

The next two workshops within the project “Development of the UK-Russia Arctic Research and collaboration Network” will be held in January and March 2018.
