ICASS IX held by the International Arctic Social Sciences Association completed its work in Umeå
The ninth International Conference on Arctic Social Sciences hosted by the Umeå University was attended by more than 800 scientists and young researchers involved in the Arctic and Subarctic research. Sessions and round table discussions on 22 main thematic areas were organized within the Conference; cultural heritage and indigenous peoples of the North, history and archeology, languages and literature, research methodologies were among them. Representatives of UArctic member institutions, as well as Thematic Networks were widely presented at the ICASS.
The conference participants shared experience in conducting research and implementing joint projects, discussed current and future Arctic research theories.
The ICASS IX plenary sessions encompassed such topics as Indigenous Perspectives on Knowledge, Role of Education and Education Research, Extractive Resource Development and Sustainability in the Arctic. The plenary “Arctic Science Through Metrics Lenses – Analyzing National & Global Trends” was moderated by the UArctic President Lars Kullerud and Igor Osipov (Far Eastern Federal University), who presented results of the UArctic Task Force on Research Analytics.
The new President of the International Arctic Social Sciences Association was elected at the IASSA General Assembly, as was the venue of the 10th Congress in 2020. The President for the period 2017 - 2020 is Andrey Petrov, representing the University of Northern Iowa, USA. The Northern (Arctic) Federal University, Russia is chosen as the next ICASS venue.
