Senior Arctic Officials gather in Salekhard for first meeting during Russia's Chairmanship of the Arctic Council

At the Senior Arctic Officials’ (SAO) meeting on December 1-2, the Russian Federation hosted a combination of delegates from the eight Arctic States, Indigenous Permanent Participant organizations, the Arctic Council’s Working Groups and Observers in a hybrid meeting format.

At the meeting the Arctic Council delegates discussed topics related to the Chairmanship program of the Russian Federation and the Arctic Council’s 10-year Strategic Plan. Topics included Indigenous and regional cooperation; a review of ongoing Arctic Council projects, sustainable socio-economic development; and youth cooperation.

UArctic partner with the Russian Chairmanship of the Arctic Council as the UArctic Congress 2022 is linked to the Russian Chairmanship program, and its themes follow its priorities. UArctic is furthermore an official observer to the Arctic Council.

Mikhail Pogodaev, who is currently serving on the board of UArctic, was invited to speak at the meeting as the appointed Special Envoy for Indigenous and Regional Cooperation, where he gave an overview of his future work in support of the Chairmanship.
