Regardless of the ability or willingness to study in a higher education in Greenland, it requires that the student can master Danish. However, this does not change the fact that the students are naturally strongest in their mother tongue. Ilisimatusarfik – University of Greenland had now chosen to accommodate this.

For the first time, the University of Greenland conducted an experiment, where interpretation was provided for an exam for one subject in one department. The experiment was based on a number of inquiries from the students who have requested to go to exams in Greenlandic.

It became the spark for a permanent arrangement that the University of Greenland is currently working for.

-The students express that it is something they would like to do again. They have been satisfied to take exams in their own language, says the rector, Gitte Adler Reimer.

-If you have a student who is very articulate in Greenlandic, but perhaps does not find the same words in Danish quite as easily, then it may give a grade difference. But this does not change what the student can do, says Bonnie Jensen.

To the question of what significance it will have if all students in the future have the opportunity to sit in exams in Greenlandic, the rector answers:

- I believe that more people will complete a university degree. It may also be that more people will apply to Ilisimatusarfik - University of Greenland. The most important thing is that our students can obtain their exams in their own language. We are working towards this, says Gitte Adler Reimer.
