Introducing new UArctic Chair Sudip Kumar Rakshit

Sudip Kumar Rakshit is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Lakehead University and a Canada Research Chair (Tier I) in Bioenergy and Biorefining Processes. He is an internationally recognized expert in sustainability research, particularly in bioenergy, biorefining, and circular bioeconomy. His work addresses critical environmental challenges with a focus on resource recovery, waste reduction, and materials reuse, all of which hold significant implications for the Arctic region and beyond.

Dr. Rakshit has made pioneering contributions in areas such as lignocellulosic biomass conversion, biodiesel production, and the utilization of by-products like crude glycerol for microbial lipid and bioplastics production. His research on techno-economics and life cycle analysis evaluates both the feasibility and environmental impacts of biorefining processes, offering valuable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders.

He has played a key role in advancing sustainability research and applications in the Northeast Canadian region, including Canada’s Provincial Norths (PN) and Arctic areas. Dr. Rakshit organized a colloquium involving Indigenous communities, researchers, and community leaders to identify climate change research priorities specific to the region, further highlighting his collaborative and impactful approach to research.

Dr. Rakshit has published extensively, trained graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, and actively contributed to the development of sustainable technologies. As UArctic Chair, his work will continue to bridge the gap between research, policy, and practical applications in the Arctic.
