Thematic Networks leaders held a successful meeting in Akureyri, Iceland

Thematic Networks leadership team meeting was held on October 14-15, 2025, hosted by University of Akureyri (UNAK), one of the founding members of UArctic. 

The meeting was held in hybrid mode allowing 26 thematic network leaders to join, in addition several members of UArctic leadership were present. Presentations and discussions included e.g. new UArctic focus areas, 5th International Polar Year and impact studies. Executive Vice President Jouko Niinimäki presented the UArctic focus areas; oceans, climate, green transition and communities and how Thematic Networks could contribute to implementing these. Secondly UArctic impact studies discussion with breakout group work was led by Stephen Heal. Stephen also presented the first phase impact studies conducted at the Thematic Network on Arctic Law and Patrick Maher, Nipissing University, Canada presented the on-going impact study on the Thematic Network on Northern Tourism Master’s courses, which he leads.  
As part of the meeting agenda a joint UNAK and UArctic seminar was held for increasing the possibilities for networking and cooperation. Seminar was opened by UNAK Rector Áslaug Ásgeirsdóttir and UArctic President Lars Kullerud.

After the opening remarks, 20th anniversaries of two Thematic Networks: Health and wellbeing in the Arctic ( which joined the ceremony online) and Verdde Indigenous Education were acknowledged with UArctic Certificates of Recognitions in a small ceremony conducted by President Lars Kullerud and Vice President Networks Kirsi Latola. Over the past 20 years both Thematic Networks have created an important and valued impact to Arctic students and residents.
