Wednesday at the museum - A concept of experiencing the museum at night
The Arctic University Museum of Norway has introduced an innovative concept to rethink how they engage with their audiences. "Wednesday at the Museum" is a monthly evening event that transforms the museum into a hub of culture, science, and social connection.
By extending its opening hours until 9:00 PM and offering a dynamic program of activities, the museum has created a unique opportunity for visitors to experience its exhibitions in a completely new way.
The concept is simple yet effective: one Wednesday evening each month, the museum opens its doors to the public for a special program that changes every time. From exhibitions to interactive events, the museum offers a diverse range of activities designed to appeal to a wide audience. Visitors can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, explore the museum’s exhibitions, and participate in engaging activities.
One of the standout features of "Wednesday at the Museum" is the Knitting Café, hosted by the Kvaløysletta Handicraft Association. This activity, held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, welcomes both beginners and experienced knitters, providing all the necessary materials for those who need them.
Siri Asphaug Holmøy, who is organizing the Wednesday at the museum events says: “The knitting café sheds light on an important aspect of Northern Norway’s cultural heritage and offers a welcoming framework for the other activities. There’s always a place at the table, no matter your experience, age, language, where you come from, or whether you’re alone, a tourist, or a local.”

“The concept aims to make it possible for visitors to take part in even more than what they originally came to the museum for. Whether that means staying on with their knitting in the evening to listen to a science talk or trying their hand at a creative challenge even though they “only” came to see an exhibition” says Siri.
By offering extended hours, the museum caters to people with busy daytime schedules, such as students, families, and working professionals. The affordable pricing, which includes free entry for children under 18 and UiT students, ensures accessibility for all. The varied program, combined with the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, encourages repeat visits and creates a deeper connection between the museum and its community.
Siri continues to tell that the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. ”It is clear that many people appreciate the events — and especially the human connections — and feel that the museum is a welcoming space to be in.”"Wednesday at the Museum" is a shining example of how museums can innovate to remain relevant and accessible in today’s fast-paced world. By blending culture, science, and social interaction, the Arctic University Museum of Norway has created a model that enhances the visitor experience and strengthens the role of museums as community hub where people can gather, learn, and connect.
