On December 6, UArctic Secretary General Outi Snellman will be awarded the decoration of the Knight of the Order of the White Rose of Finland. The decorations are conferred annually upon citizens who have distinguished themselves in the service of Finland.

As explained in the guide to the Orders and decorations of Finland, "[t]he decorations of the Orders of the White Rose of Finland and the Lion of Finland [...] have a key part to play within the state honours system. Being acknowledged and recognised for exceptional merits, achievements or service is still important in all fields and at all levels in Finnish society." The decoration of the Knight is one of the five senior decoration classes of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.

The President of the Republic of Finland serves as the Grand Master of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and the Order of the Lion of Finland and has the exclusive right to confer their decorations. Decorations conferred upon Finnish citizens are awarded annually on Finland’s Independence Day, December 6.
