Hans Bernstein is a professor in microalgae and microbiome engineering at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. He is a leading researcher and has significantly contributed to molecular microbial ecology and bioengineering, with a focus on Arctic marine ecosystems and biotechnological developments for environmental sustainability. Bernstein leads the Microalgae and Microbiomes Research Group (M2RG) at UiT, focusing on carbon capture, sequestration, and utilization. His work at the Arctic Centre for Sustainable Energy (ARC) has significantly advanced knowledge on Arctic microbial communities and their role in mitigating climate change. His research explores how marine microbiomes, particularly diatoms, respond to changing CO₂ levels, offering insights into carbon cycling and storage in the Arctic.
Beyond his scientific contributions, Bernstein is a committed educator and mentor, fostering the next generation of Arctic researchers. He has played a key role in establishing major initiatives like the PHOTOSYNTECH PhD training school and the ABSORB project, which focus on integrating biotechnology and environmental sustainability. His interdisciplinary approach bridges academia and industry, ensuring that scientific discoveries translate into real-world applications for the Arctic and beyond.
