Launched in March 2025, the University of Ottawa Arctic Research Hub is a three-year pilot initiative designed to strengthen Canada’s leadership in Arctic science by connecting and expanding interdisciplinary research across scientific, social, and policy domains. Building on the University of Ottawa’s strong Arctic research foundation, the Hub fosters collaboration among researchers, Indigenous communities, and policy-makers to support inclusive, solutions-oriented research and evidence-based decision-making for Arctic communities and environments.

Launched in March 2025, the University of Ottawa's Arctic Research Hub is a strategic initiative designed to elevate Canada’s leadership in Arctic science. Spearheaded by the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation, and the Faculty of Arts, this three-year pilot project aims to connect, amplify, and expand interdisciplinary Arctic research across scientific, social, economic, and policy domains.

Canada Research Chair in Environment, Society, and Policy and Associate Professor at the University of Ottawa, Dr. Jackie Dawson states, “The new Arctic Research Hub at the University of Ottawa represents an important opportunity for collaborative and mission-based science at a time where rapid change urgently requires scientific cooperation and diplomacy. Located in Canada’s National Capital Region, our researchers and partners collaborate on shared focus areas, including climate change adaptation, infrastructure innovation, and Arctic governance and security. Our membership in UArctic allows us to join a global network dedicated to amplifying Arctic voices, promoting interdisciplinary research, and supporting evidence-based solutions for the North.”

The Hub builds on the University of Ottawa’s strong foundation in Arctic studies, including its leadership in national initiatives like ArcticNet and Arctic Pulse. It fosters collaboration among researchers, Indigenous communities, and policy-makers to address the cascading impacts of climate change, geopolitical shifts, and resource development in the Arctic. Central to its mission is the integration of Indigenous knowledge and leadership, ensuring that research is inclusive, community-driven, and solutions-oriented.

Located in Canada's National Capital, the Hub is uniquely positioned to influence national and international Arctic policy. It supports knowledge mobilization, training, and innovation, reinforcing Canada’s reputation as a global Arctic research leader.

Through bridging disciplines and fostering partnerships, the Arctic Research Hub is not only advancing scientific understanding but also shaping sustainable futures for Arctic communities and ecosystems. It represents a bold step toward a more resilient, equitable, and informed approach to Arctic change.
