Arctic Circle Assembly Report from Renald George Swamy

With the support from the Young Arctic project and the UArctic Travel Grant,  Renald George Swamy from Luleå University of Technology was in attendance to Arctic Circle Assembly 2026.

My name is Renald George Swamy, and I am a PhD student in the Wood and Bionanocomposites research group at Luleå University of Technology, Sweden. My research focuses on turning underused materials, particularly spent mushroom substrate and textile fibres, into fibre-based materials for packaging. I am interested in how we can make better use of resources that are often treated as waste.

I wanted to attend the Arctic Circle Assembly because my research is connected to a broader question: how can we develop materials while using resources responsibly? The Assembly gave me an opportunity to hear perspectives from researchers, policymakers and others working on the future of the Arctic. As an early-career researcher based in northern Sweden, I valued the chance to place my laboratory work in that wider context.

The travel grant made it possible for me to participate in an international event that I would otherwise have found difficult to attend. I came away with a broader understanding of the environmental and societal questions surrounding resource use in the Arctic, and new ideas about how to communicate the relevance of my research beyond my own field. This experience will help me as I complete my PhD and explore future research collaborations. I am grateful to UArctic for supporting my participation.
