Apply now: Externships on Arctic AI
Students and mentors are invited to take part in a new initiative exploring how artificial intelligence can address real-world challenges and opportunities in the Arctic.
Umeå University has launched Externships on Arctic AI, a flexible and primarily remote project-based initiative developed through collaboration between the Arctic Centre and TAIGA – Centre for Transdisciplinary AI.
The initiative brings together students, researchers and professionals from different disciplines to explore how AI can be developed and used in ways that are meaningful, responsible and beneficial for Arctic societies, environments and cultures.
The externships are open to students from universities around the world and can be combined with their existing studies. There is no requirement to be physically present in Umeå, and participation does not require a formal exchange agreement or employment arrangement.
Students take part in defined Arctic AI-related projects with guidance from researchers and experts. Depending on their home institution and programme, an externship may contribute towards a course, internship or Master's degree project. Externships run for a minimum of three months, with longer periods encouraged.
The initiative welcomes students from a wide range of disciplines, including ecology, biology, plant science, anthropology, linguistics, law, social sciences, mathematics, medicine and health. Some knowledge of AI is expected, although participants do not need to be machine-learning specialists.
Mentors and project hosts from academia and professional practice are also invited to participate. They can support students by sharing expertise, discussing project ideas and offering academic or professional guidance. Mentors are not expected to provide funding, employment or formal supervision.
