Radar Remote Sensing Laboratory (RRSL)
Advancing the understanding and application of radio wave scattering for remote sensing of ocean and land characteristics using various radar technologies. Description: The Radar Remote Sensing Laboratory (RRSL) is a dedicated research facility located in the Core Science Building. Led by Dr. Weimin Huang, Dr. Eric Gill, and Dr. Cecilia Moloney, the RRSL conducts research focused on enhancing our understanding of radio wave scattering phenomena, particularly from rough surfaces such as the ocean. The laboratory specializes in developing theoretical models and application algorithms for remote sensing, with a focus on utilizing high-frequency surface wave radars (HFSWR), microwave marine radar, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and the global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique.

Specific areas of research interest include:
-
Electromagnetic (EM) Scattering from Rough Surfaces: Investigating the behavior of radio waves when interacting with complex and rough surfaces, especially the ocean.
-
HFSWR Remote Sensing: Utilizing high-frequency surface wave radars to remotely sense and monitor ocean surface parameters, including waves, wind, and currents, as well as tracking targets such as ships and sea ice.
-
Microwave Marine Radar: Developing techniques and technologies to gather sea surface current and wave information and to detect and track various targets using microwave marine radar systems.
The RRSL is at the forefront of advancing radar remote sensing capabilities, particularly for applications related to oceanography and land characterization. Their research contributes to a better understanding of our environment and has practical applications in fields such as marine science, environmental monitoring, and navigation.
