Dust hot spots of the Arctic: High Latitude Dust field campaigns 2023
Summer 2023 was an excellent opportunity to measure dust storms in the Arctic. UArctic Thematic Network on High Latitude Dust organized nine field campaigns to measure dust storms in Iceland (2), Greenland (4), Canada (1), and Svalbard (2).
Summary of the campaigns: HLD Field Campaigns 2023 (pdf)
In addition, ice nucleating ability of a range of high latitude dusts from the Arctic and Antarctic using the aerosol chamber at the University of Leeds, UK was investigated in combination with various techniques for quantifying ice nucleation. Analyses have also been done at the University of Birmingham, UK for the samples obtained from the research cruise from Iceland to Labrador Sea and Davis Strait from May to June 2022 to investigate aerosol including HLD. HLD was found at several locations with air masses from North or Northwest, indicating from Greenland.
