The travel program was funded through the UArctic north2north mobility program in Canada, which facilitates student and faculty exchange programs. It was organized by professors at Yukon University in collaboration with Aurora College, Nunavut Arctic College, and Memorial University’s Labrador Campus. The visit follows the success of another field school activity in February 2024, bringing students to Finland and Norway for a “Study Tour,” allowing students to see opportunities abroad while learning about social, economic, and environmental conditions in Northern Europe. This Yukon University trip included visits to Rovaniemi and Inari in Finland, as well as Karasjok and Kautokeino in Norway.

During the visit to Inari, the Yukon University group and UArctic staff members received a tour of the Sámi Education Institute—where the next UArctic Assembly will be held in June, 2025. The school is a higher education institute that opened in 1993 with the purpose to provide education and training with the traditional knowledge and practices of the Sámi people.
