The aim of the campaign was to enhance technology knowhow in wilderness conditions. The final target is seamless technology transfer to support traditional livelihood. Off grid power tools, drones and satellite connectivity to provide a local network were tested in a four-day trip to the Pöyrisjärvi lake area, which is a Sami reindeer herding village belonging to Näkkälä Reindeer Herding Cooperative.

Harri performed Starlink measurements. A test was executed in a slope that shadowed direct visibility to the sky but was very close to a cottage located in a bit wind sheltered position and close to a lake. Another test was done in open area a bit further away from the cottage, i.e., in the top of the slope. The results showed that Starlink could be used as an Internet connectivity provider in remote areas even though the Starlink satellite constellation is very scarce in the North.

A remark is that one has to be very careful when transporting the device over bumpy “roads”, both summer and winter, and protect the connectors from dust and snow.
