New Publication: Conceptualizing the interplay between remoteness and modes of governing solid waste in Arctic small and medium-sized cities
The UArctic Thematic Network on Local-scale Planning for Climate Resilience is pleased to share “Conceptualizing the interplay between remoteness and modes of governing solid waste in Arctic small and medium-sized cities” by N. Filimonova (member) and S.J. Birchall (lead), published Open Access with the journal Cities.
In this conceptual article, the authors argue that municipal solid waste management is a significant yet often overlooked challenge in cities located in the Arctic, particularly with respect to societal, environmental, and governance considerations. Drawing on the modes of governing municipal waste framework, the authors showcase how the impacts of remoteness are reflected in Arctic cities and their national governments' capacity to manage solid waste at a distance.
