Speaker Series: "Building resilient places: The promise and paradox of place-based adaptation"
Thematic Network on Local-scale Planning for Climate Resilience will host the next Speaker Series event: "Building resilient places: The promise and paradox of place-based adaptation" online via Zoom on May 1, 2026. The session will feature Sarah Kehler from the University of Alberta, Canada.
Place-based adaptation is often proposed as a pathway to building resilience in the face of climate
change - but what exactly is “place,” and why would it matter for resilience?
In this talk Sarah argues that place is a biocultural adaptation that grounds our knowledge and values in unique, spatially-oriented ontologies. Through this lens, Sarah explores what this means for climate adaptation, and those that plan for it.
