International Coordination Office for the fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5) announced
The IPY-5 International Coordination Office will be located in Tromsø, Norway and hosted by an international consortium of four institutions.
The announcement about the fifth International Polar Year Coordination Office (ICO) was made by Norway‘s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre earlier this week in Arendal, Norway.
Spanning three continents, a consortium of four institutions will host the ICO: The Arctic University of Norway (UiT), the Norwegian Polar Institute (NPI), the Korea Polar Research Institute (KOPRI), and the Chilean Antarctic Institute (INACH). The main office will be located in Tromsø, with Norway and UiT serving as the physical host and lead financial contributor of the ICO. Two regional offices, hosted and funded by KOPRI and INACH, will also be established.
The ICO will begin its work in early 2027 and will support the IPY-5 Executive Committee and Planning Group on all matters concerning the fifth International Polar Year. A key part of its mandate is to ensure the meaningful participation and leadership of Indigenous Peoples and the inclusion of Indigenous knowledge systems throughout IPY-5. The ICO will also promote open science and support the participation and leadership of early-career researchers.
