TELUS World of Science - Edmonton

TWOSE is public science center offering a wide range of science-based experiences. The centre has a total area of about 12,000 sq m, and that includes exhibit galleries, an IMAX theatre, Canada's largest planetarium, a presentation stage, a 1,000 sq m travelling exhibition hall, and amenities including a cafe and gift shop.

The exhibit galleries explore the science of health, environment, space and astronomy, life sciences, and engineering. The IMAX theatre has the largest screen in Alberta and was one of the very first institutional theatres in the world to upgrade to the new generation IMAX laser projection system with 12-channel audio. The theatre seats 200. The planetarium, the Margaret Zeidler Star Theatre, is Canada's largest with a dome diameter of 23 m. It seats 250. It is being completely renovated in 2017.

TWOSE handles about 600,000 admissions each year. That comprises admissions to the science centre and its various programs, the IMAX theatre, and the pan-Alberta outreach program.

TWOSE is currently working on the most ambitious expansion and renovation project in its 30-year history. It is called the Aurora Project and will tackle new science that will define Edmonton in the 21st century. Drawing inspiration from the aurora, this project injects TWOSE with renewed energy, illuminating the amazing world of science, engineering, technology, math, and art.

One of the cornerstones of the expansion is a new 1,000 sq m gallery devoted to polar science, particularly the Canadian Arctic. TWOSE wants to focus attention on the complex and vitally important science, engineering, and technology that will shape the economy and culture of Canada’s North.

In addition, the current planetarium will be updated to bring exciting new digital visualization experiences to the centre, connecting visitors with the cutting edge work undertaken by scientists.

TWOSE is growing to meet the demands of a young, well-educated community. A huge part of that growth is maintaining relevance to the issues of the day, and engaging our community in larger discussions and explorations about vital issues such as polar science.
