UArctic Thematic Network Lead Ilan Kelman Receives International Recognition

Lead of the Thematic Network on Disasters and Natural Hazards, Ilan Kelman, has received several international honours for contributions to disaster research and resilience. The recognitions highlight both individual achievements and collective efforts in Arctic research and education.

 

Ilan Kelman was awarded the 2026 Professor Douglas Paton Distinguished Researcher Lifetime Legacy Award, recognising and advancing Douglas’s visionary work in disaster science, his deep commitment to education, and his global impact on building resilient communities.

In addition, Kelman received the Geoethics Medal 2025 from the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) and was elected to Academia Europaea.

These awards are not about the individual, but are about working collectively so that Arctic research and education continue to inspire and exemplify rigorous scholarship to serve society, kindness to everyone and the world, and respectful exchange including education, training, teaching, and learning. These honours reflect predecessors and collaborators in Arctic science and education.
