Trinity Centre for the Environment

The Trinity Centre for the Environment (TCE) is a teaching and research centre within the School of Natural Sciences, Trinity College Dublin, Ireland. It provides a forum and research infrastructure for academics, postdoctoral researchers, postgraduate students, visiting researchers who work in any aspect of the environment. TCE also supports entrepreneurs in bio-based industries, in areas relating to environment and human health, or sectors which support efforts in climate innovation and sustainability. Broad focus areas include aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, the goods and services these systems provide (natural capital, ecosystem services), and the sustainability of human/environment interactions.

TCE is a hub for visiting researchers and students in areas of science, technology, engineering, policy and public perception relating to the environment. Our aim is to promote and facilitate interdisciplinary research and teaching in key areas of environment and sustainability, while addressing relevant sustainable development goals. Research at TCE is carried out by teams and students attached to the Centre, and our facilities support external researchers. TCE played a lead role in developing and housing taught Masters courses in Environmental Sciences and Biodiversity & Conservation, both of which are strongly linked with the research focus of the Centre.

Within Trinity College Dublin, TCE enjoys a close liaison with the Botanic Gardens, the Schools of Engineering, Business Studies and Psychology. The Centre has strong external links and collaborations with Dublin City Council, the Marine Institute, Inland Fisheries Ireland, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Network of Arctic Researchers in Ireland. TCE students and researchers collaborate widely on externally funded projects within Europe and globally. TCE is Trinity College’s lead facilitator for Climate-KIC (European Institute of Innovation and Technology, Knowledge Innovation Community), regularly hosting international summer schools and one-off events in climate action and climate innovation.
