Fudan University

Founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School, Fudan University is the first higher education institution founded by Chinese scholars to serve as an institutional space guaranteeing scholarly excellence and academic independence. The name of “Fudan” comes from A Commentary on the Classic of History, connoting its faith that the university shall serve as beacon for social progress. The University’s guiding principles are the promotion of quality education and research, the betterment of sustained public service for the common good, and the contribution to China’s social, economic, and cultural development.

Fudan University is a research-oriented comprehensive university renowned both at home and abroad for its humanities, sciences, social sciences, engineering and medical sciences, ranking within the top 5% of universities in the world with 34th in the QS ranking and 70th in THE ranking in 2021. Fudan has a number of humanities and social science research institutes supported by the Ministry of Education (MoE) of China. It also boasts 5 National Key Laboratories, 2 National Research Centers for clinical medicine, 1 national Innovation Center for Manufacture, 1 Shanghai Mathematics Center and 80 ministry level research platforms in science and medical disciplines. Fudan offers 70 bachelor degree programs, 154 doctoral degree programs and 224 master degree programs to students across the world.

Fudan has also been taking an active part in global engagement. It is the founding member of a number of university networks, including AEARU, APRU, U21, BRICS UL, FLAUC, etc. There are over 4,000 outgoing students on exchange every year, and over 7,000 international students from 130 countries and regions studying at Fudan each year, 42% of which are degree-seeking students.

Fudan is playing an increasingly important role in atmospheric and oceanic Sciences, as well as Arctic research. The Institute of Atmospheric Sciences and the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences (IAS/AOS), Fudan University is one of China’s best atmospheric and oceanic research organisations and delivers contributions to international research on climate and oceanic issues. IAS/AOS is also one of the China leading institutes in Arctic research.
